Introduction:
On his mother’s lap sits John, 8 months old, curiously observing the new environment around him, using his eyes and babbling to get in touch with me sitting in front of him. He seems happy and maybe a bit stressed out, very busy adjusting to a new milieu and to a new person, the psychoanalyst.
– Well, as you can see for yourself, he doesn’t look at me, John’s mother says with a slightly discouraged look.
He doesn’t need to, since he knows you are there, I think to myself. Additionally, he is sitting with his back towards her.
Still, now John and his mom are here, and I need to listen and try to learn what they have to say, and how I’m supposed to help them.
When a new mother is getting in touch with me as a psychoanalyst, there’s no time to waste. Something needs to be done, or at least sorted out, and the mother is in a hurry. Things must not go wrong, everything needs to be just fine at the least, but rather perfect, before time has passed.
Quite often, in those cases, one of the main concerns is the eye contact between the infant and the mother. The mother perceives that the baby doesn’t make eye contact with her as with other people.
In this seminar, I’d like to elaborate on a clinical case of a mother and her baby boy, and possible implications of this kind of psychoanalytic work. Theoretically and empirically, we’ll start off with S Freud, Donald Winnicott and Selma Fraiberg and Psychodynamic Therapy with Infants and Parents (PTIP). Then we’ll move over to the Swedish psychoanalyst Johan Norman. Furthermore, we’ll continue to get to know more from contemporary clinicians, such as Hendrika Halberstad-Freud and Björn Salomonsson. We will hopefully touch upon Beatrice Beebe’s research and clinical work as well.
I’m certainly looking forward to collaborating with you on this topic and to learn more together. Welcome!
